In the world we live nowadays digital technologies have become essential for our society, and they will always be as such even in a future. Indeed, the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has demonstrated this fact in an incredible way.
The competences in a digital ambit are the bases to enforce the resiliency of the UE’s society. The latter places to itself the goal of digitalize different factors in several ambits, from the work to the concept; pursuing guide politics for the citizens and the enterprises in an anthropocentric, sustainable, and prosper digital future.
The Digital Compass for the 2030 has the goal of utilizing technological capacities to place citizens and companies in the necessary conditions to exploit benefits of the digital transformation, and constitute a healthier and more sustainable society.

The main points to make the European Union more digital are:

  • 1. A population with digital competences and with high qualified experts in the digital sector:The UE aims in having qualified citizens and workers in the digital sector thanks to a digital education and to politics with the purpose of attracting talents from the whole world.
    The formation and education in the digital field has the goal the goal of forming the citizens to be capable of identify fraud tentative, to protect themselves from cyber-attacks, and from the online scams.By 2030:

    – More than 20 million of specialist should be engaged in the UE into the sector of information technologies (IT) and information communication technologies (ICTs), with a convergence between women and men.

    – At least the 80% of the adult population should have basic digital competences.

  • 2. Sustainable, safe, and performant digital infrastructure:The connectivity, the microelectronic and the capacity to elaborate massive quantity of data are indispensable requirements to have a digital future and a competitive advantage of the industry.
    In this way, the goals to reach by 2030 are:- All the European families are covered by a Gigabit network, and all the lived areas by the 5G network;
    – The production of forefront and sustainable semiconductors in Europe, including processors, will represent at least the 20% of the global production’s value;
    – 10.000 peripheral nodes with no climate impact and highly safe will be installed in the UE. They will be distributed based on the enterprises’ location, in a way that will guarantee the access to data services with low-latency (few milliseconds);
    – By 2025 Europe will dispose its first computer with quantum acceleration, which will enable to perform a forefront role.
  • 3. Enterprises’ digital transformation:During the pandemic caused by COVID-19, for the majority of companies the utilisation of technologies and digital products have become fundamental. The transition to a digital society brings several advantages, it generates a minor environmental footprint, and it implies a major materials’ energetic efficiency. The PMI play a key role in the UE enterprises, that is because they are an essential seat of innovation.According to the European goals by 2030:

    – The 75% of European enterprises will use computing cloud services, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI);
    – More than 90% of European PMI will reach at least a basic level of digital intensity;
    – Europe will increase the number of scale-up innovative and it will improve the access to funding, doubling the number of “unicorn” enterprises in Europe.

  • 4. Digitalization of public services:The democratic life and online public services must be guaranteed and fully available to everyone, so that everyone can benefit of a digital ambient of the best quality, which can offer instruments and services easy to use and personalized. These, with elevate standards in terms of safety, and protection of private life.UE goals for the 2030:

    – 100% of principal public services available online for the European enterprises and European citizens;
    – 100% of European citizens will have access to medical records (electronic);
    – 80% of citizens will use the digital identification.

The EU Digital Agenda for the 2030 brings advantages for enterprises, which could be aligned with the innovations brought by the Industry 4.0. Concretely these goals will allow to innovate, to start expanding the enterprises, to attract investments and to create new work places. The productions could orientate themselves on new products, new manufacturing processes and new commercial models.
